“Though the fig tree may not blossom
Nor fruit be on the vines
Though the labor of the olive may fail
And the fields yield no food
Though the flocks may be cut off
from the field
And there be no herd in the stalls
Yet, I will rejoice in the Lord
I will joy in the God of my salvation.”
Habakkuk 3:17-18
This is one of my top most favorite passages in the Bible. If you ask me,”Why?
I would consider this to be a believer’s creed to pledge and live by.
It is easy to call ourselves Christians and believe in God when everything around us is going smoothly and hadn’t been rocked by the quake of adversities. But when the floor beneath you fall apart and you stand alone , with all your holdings gone, with no belongings to call your own, how many of us would stand up with such faith to proclaim like Habakkuk in this passage?
Only someone whose eyes are on God and not on the circumstances could declare his /her faith like this while the rest raise their hands and crying out”Why me? Why me, Lord?”
The person of steadfast faith dwells in the knowledge of God and of His faithfulness in the past, rest in the assurance that everything is well with his soul. For him/her God is sufficient to keep going. People, prosperity and power come and go. Nothing is permanent for us to hold onto. That’s why Jesus asked us to seek God and His kingdom first. Other things come to us as bonus. Thus those display faith like Habakkuk are truly the Optimists in my view.
